The Ford Fiesta equipped with a new three-cylinder engine will get the best highway fuel economy of any car with the exception of some diesels and hybrids, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
The tiny 1.0-liter turbocharged engine will give the car 45 miles per gallon in highway driving, 37 mpg in combined driving and 32 in city driving, Ford Motor Co. said.
It’s a sign of the times that Ford is gearing up to launch the smallest capacity engine, with less cylinders than any it has previously produced.

Ford says that the small three-cylinder engine will have the same power as a standard four-cylinder engine, but with a better fuel economy. The Fiesta’s standard four-cylinder engine is a 1.6-liter motor rated at 120 horsepower with 112 lb.-ft. of torque. The company says that the turbocharger adds extra power to the three-cylinder motor without guzzling more gas.

国産コンパクトカーよりも倍近い価格ですからそうあって欲しいのは当然ですが、言われなければ直列3気筒だと分からないほど。
エンジンを上まで回せば室内もそれなりに騒がしくなりますが、音はよく抑えられていて、重量増を避けるためバランスシャフトを装備していないのに振動もほとんど気になりません。
フライホイールとクランクを意図的にアンバランスにすることで振動を相殺するという工夫の成果ということですが、これなら早朝の住宅街などでも近所を気にせず出かけられそう。
1.0Lの直列3気筒「EcoBoost（エコブースト）」エンジンは、229万円という車両価格を考えると、ダウンサイジング、シリンダーレス花盛りのいまでも一瞬躊躇してしまうかもしれませんが、動力性能、音・振動面ではデメリットは感じられず、2012年、13年の2年連続で「インターナショナル・エンジン・オブ・ザ・イヤー」を獲得した実力を十分に実感できます。
