Ok its 12:30am and im tired but ill give this a shot so excuse any poor typing/grammer also I might let some things out Im jsut putting in the major steps i remember.
There is a special tool kit made that should be available on ebay or any aftermarket ford focus parts site such as www.c-f-m.com or www.focussport.com
Getting to the timing belt requires removal of front engine mount both halves the one attached to the body and the metal piece on the front of the engine, the idler pulley needs to be removed to get toa bolt under it. Make sure to have a floor jack under the engine before removing so the engine does not drop out. then remove upper cam cover and valve cover.
With the valve cover removed and your special tools in hand rotate the engine clock wise untill the 2 marks in the rear of the cam shafts line up level with the head and the one flat bar the comes in the tool kit can be inserted if your 180 off the notches will be below the head level and the bar wont fit. When they are lined up rotate conter clockwise slightly.
There is a plug in the side of the engien facing the radiator close to the transmission behind the catalytic converter. Remove the plug and insert the other half of the special tool kit it threads in and stops the crank directly on TDC.
It takes some time to get it in jsut right when you have it in figner tight crankt he engine by hand clock wise and it should hit and stop and when it does the cam marks should be lined up perfect for insertion of the cam lock bar.
The 2 allen head bolts on the gam gears need to be loosened when loose the gam gears will spin freely the only thing holding them still is the bolt there are no notches, grooves, pins or clips of any type.
The belt tensioner is to the right of the engine you use a 6 mm allen get to set tension and i there is a pinch bolt i forget its size.
You loosen the pinch bolt roughly 6 turns and there is a leg that comes off the back and goes into the engine you want the bolt loose enough to get that leg out to spin the tensioner out of the way.
On installation start on crankshaft and install counter clockwise make sure all slack is on tensioner side with the pulleys loose and allt he locks in place this is super easy.
When all slack is on the tensioner side grab the leg of the tensioner rock it back into place and turn the bolt in a little so it stays in place you then insert a 6mm allen key into the adjuster turn it till the marks like up then tighten the pinch bolt. after the timing belt is tight feel free to tighten the cam shaft sprockets back up.
DO NOT RELY ON THE TOOLS TO HOLD EVERYTHING IN PLACE WHEN LOOSENING AND TIGHTENING. The crank lock can break and enter your oil pan and the cam lock can snap ears off of camshafts. From personal experiance the easiest way to loosen the cam bolts is with a t-55 torx bit and an impact gun. your not trying to keep a nasa space shuttle together though so keep that in mind when tightening it.
The cams just have no where to hold them from spining and the impact action frees them right up and snugs them down. Also the tool kit most likely comes with instructions but if you have any mechanical background most of what i typed should make sense once its apart and your holding the tools looking at it.

Can anyone advise the torx bit size for a ford zetec cam pulley bolt? The car is a 2000 W Mondeo 1.8 petrol.
I can't be sure, but I'm fairly certain it's a T50 - anybody confirm?

Remove the crank pulley no special pulelr can useually be pulled off by hand.
Remove the spark plugs to make it easier to crank the engine by hand.

remove all the locks from the tool kit make 2 revolutions and verify that you can reinstall the tools showing that everything is still in line.
You dont need to loosen the camshaft gears but it will make it easier.
