Tech notes
An stretched timing chain or damaged tensioner can also caused triggered the P1009 code. Before replacing timing chain or tensioner, check engine oil level and condition. Replaced engine oil and filter with factory recommend oil weight if necessary.

P1009 Honda Description

The variable valve timing control (VTC) system controls the phase of the intake camshaft. It uses oil pressure to operate the VTC actuator so the valve timing is optimized depending on driving conditions.

Code P1009 
I have gotten a check engine light twice in a few days, cleared one and it came back on again. Well it was code P1009. Witch means VTC actuator failure. So honda checked code and replaced VTEC valve switch assymbly.

Then code came back up on HDS test for them witch ended up being a valve that was sticking and a strainer replacement. They replaced this all and everything is fine as I can tell. The cost would have been $417.50 if I didnt have a extra warranty. Hope this helps if you get the same code.削除

so my CEL keeps coming on and i get three codes:
P0420
P0302
P1009

i know the first is a cat issue and the second is a misfire in cylinder #2 and both codes can be tripped by P1009. 
has anyone had experience installing a new VTC solenoid, actuator,filter etc.?削除

is it possible that my valve timing is pretty far off and that is what is tripping the code? (i only ask that because the valves have never been adjusted). 

i have an '06 with 216K on it and i'm kind of getting used to wrenching on it myself - i would be really discouraged to have to take it to a shop to have the work done.

any thoughts or advice would be very helpful.

fwiw...I'd start by checking the valves. Its way overdue, and they are likely to need some adjustment, even if it doesn't solve your CEL issue.

When the valve cover is off, you'll have a nice view of the insides of the motor...if it looks "sludge-ly" (is that a word?!) is wouldn't hurt to check the vtec switch/valve & screen.削除

I am the original owner of a 2005 Magnesium Metallic EX 4WD AT that now has around 115000 miles on it and its never given me any trouble beyond a few issues with motor mounts and the usual consumables needing replaced (brake pads, fluids, filters, etc). About 3-4 months ago while I was driving on the PA turnpike, I merged into traffic and discovered about 2 miles later that my check engine light was on.削除

Fortunately, my vehicle is equipped with a Scangauge so I was able to pull over, get the trouble code and Google it on my Android, so thanks to the EOC, I know what the trouble code means and that I'd make it home safely that night. Once I arrived at my destination, I had the vehicle repaired and it turned out to be a clogged VTEC sieve, concurrent with the diagnosis that is going around on the EOC forums for that trouble code.削除

Fast-forward to this past weekend. I got the ol' "Check Fuel Cap" indicator on my odometer. It dawned on me that the last time I put gas in the car, I was in NJ (where you can't pump your own gas) and I don't think the attendant put the gas cap back on tight enough. Reading the EOC, I know that it might take a few cycles for it to get cleared so I wasn't stressed about it, especially considering that I had just filled the tank yesterday and made sure that I clicked the cap about 4 times.削除

I was driving home tonight and suddenly found that while the "Check Fuel Cap" message was gone, the Check Engine light was again illuminated. The Scangauge told me that once again, it was the same P1009 trouble code that I had before. Additionally, my Scangauge would not let me clear the error and it just kind of blank-screened at me.削除

It could just be that your VTEC screen or solenoid has clogged again. How often do you change your oil?

I wouldn't think that the VTEC and vapor recovery systems could be related. However, in March of this year Dheacoc11 reported getting P1009 and P1454 codes at the same time. Unfortunately he never reported back.

I change my oil every 3k miles or every 3 months, whichever comes first. I'm still about 40 days away from being due and it looks like I'm gonna hit the 3 month limit this time instead of the 3k limit. Its funny you mention the oil. The first time that I got the P1009 code, I had just stopped for fuel and checked my oil about 5 minutes prior.削除

The oil level was right around where it should be, but I did have the oil changed once I got to my destination since I read on the EOC and elsewhere that it could be as simple as dirty oil. The check engine light went out after I had the oil changed. Even more bizarre; my state inspection was due and it passed PA state inspection! About two weeks later, the light came on again so I had it serviced and they replaced my VTEC strainer.削除

Just hours before this happened over the weekend, I taught my 17 y/o cousin a very important lesson; how to check his engine oil. I demonstrated this on both his car (a brand new Hyundai Sonata 2.0T; lucky kid, eh?) and my Element to show that its done the same way on every make/model. My engine oil level was definitely within the limits and my oil wasn't dirty.削除

When my "Check Fuel Cap" indicator came on, it didn't turn on the Check Engine Light. I even tried to reset it using my Scangauge, but it didn't actually throw a trouble code like with Dheacoc11's issue.削除

Anyhow, I took my Element in for service and they told me the VTC actuator is clogged which is kind of worrisome since I know its not an easy part to get to. I have the factory service manual and while I can definitely change my own oil, this is definitely a job I won't attempt myself.削除

Have you replaced your serpentine belt? If not, you could take advantage of this opportunity to replace it and the tensioner. Then the only additional item needing removal to get to the VTC actuator screen is the power steering pump. It will cost less to clean out the screen (and change the gasket) than to swap out the actuator, which may or may not actually need replacing. Just a thought.削除

ホンダのディーラーにダイアグの出し方を聞くと「モニターをつながないと見れないので車を持ってきてください」と言われました。
コネクタの短絡によるダイアグコードの読み出しはメーカーの修理書にものってないようです。
モニターがない場合も専用のターミナルＢＯＸを使ってダイアグを出すようになります。
実際は端子を短絡すればコードを読み出すことはできるようです。


●ダイアグモニター接続コネクターがある車
９番端子と４番端子を短絡しキーをＯＮにしてチェックエンジンランプの点滅回数を読み取る

エンジンチェックランプが点灯したと点検のＲＧ１のステップワゴン、
入庫時は既にチェックランプは消えており、
残ったダイアグコードはＰ１００９でＶＴＣ進角異常。
とりあえず１度目なので消去して、オイルはよく汚れていましたので、
０Ｗ２０の粘度でオイル交換。整備書もまずオイルと指示があります。
一旦お返しして日常どおり乗っていただくことに。
その後ランプの再点灯はなく、ただややエンジンルームより
異音が聞こえるような、、、ということで再点検。

ＡＴＦとパワステフルードをともに純正で交換。
やや小さな唸りを上げていたのはパワステポンプなのではないかと？
パワステオイルが痩せて異音が出ていたのではないかなぁ。
試運転を実施してＯＫです。
