I don't have pictures. The ring gear is the big gear mounted to the engine output shaft that the starter engages to start the engine.

The teeth on this gear are used by the crankshaft position sensor (CPS) to sense the rotation of the crankshaft. At one particular position, there are 2 teeth missing on the gear. These missing teeth mark top dead center for cylinder #1. The CPS senses the missing teeth, and the computer uses this information to time the engine spark properly.

Current fault: 017 Crankshaft position sensor L5. Still get this code, i have changed the sensor three times now,.... ??? Could it be a EZL fault ? Engine stall, hard to start, cold/warm. w 420 coupe.

Question Re Stall due to Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS) - L5
I have had My 2001 500SL for about a year . It has around 100k and until today ran with absolutely no problems. I drove it to the store and came out and it would turn over but not start . After 15 minutes it started right up. I drove home - no problems and then it stalled when I pulled into the driveway.

There are no idiot lights coming on. I live in a small town with only one MB shop. I don't want to get ripped off. I have a plug and diagnostic software. Do you think the problem will indicate between stalls? Any thoughts on suspected causes appreciated.

BTW it is around 100 degrees today if someone thinks it might be a factor.

'99 ML320 CPS problem, or what?
I read a previous post about the crank position sensor, and makes me wonder what is up with mine now. About 2 weeks ago, wife called and had started the ML, drove about 3 blocks, went in to buy some groceries, and when she went to leave, it would only turn over, and not fire/start. She tried 5-6 times, and nothing.

I came down after it sat for about 15 minutes, put in my key and away it went. Ran great since. Now today, I started it, drove it around the block to my front driveway, shut it off and about 20 minutes later, it was dead, same as before. Tried several times, let it sit for 15 minutes, and away it started.

I left it idle and after about 5-8 minutes, it just stopped and nothing again for 3-4 tries, let it sit 15 minutes, and away it went. Drove it around the back to my shop and Mercedes mechanic was giving suggestions over the phone.

I am the second owner, all records up to date when I got it last August, and he (original dealership) figured the plugs were due, since it has 90,000km (55,000 miles), I pulled the (I think original Bosch) plugs, and the platinum tip was totally gone on all of them! Changed them out with NGK and starts fine 10 times, drove it around some. Could this be MY issue, or is the CPS still suspect to all this?

W211 failing to start

I have had a friend scan the car and the following OBD code has come up

" P2034 L5 Crankshaft Position Sensor P0335 "

I'm guessing that due to sensor on crank shaft being faulty car is not starting

I have rang GSF and they quoted ￡30 for the sensor how easy is it to change and does anyone have a "DIY" on it.

FAULT CODE: 0521

DESCRIPTION: Diagnosis of tumble flap "intake manifold" short circuit to ground of sensor lines/Tumble flap shafts stick in the actuated position.(P2004)

The technician doesn't have any clue about it as there is no reference code to check

Was your car taken to a place that has STAR?
I think your code needs more investigation but I would guess a faulty MAF sensor.

Get it to an indy who has STAR or a dealer who can check further into that fault code for you. They will probably clear the fault and see if it returns when starting the car.
