つねに一定の速度ではないピストンのスピードを【平均速度】で示したものを【平均ピストンスピード】といいます。
平均ピストンスピードは、【毎分回転数】（RPM）を、一秒間の回転数（60）でわって、
ストローク（行程）に時間当たりの往復回数（クランク1回転で1往復・回転数の2倍）を掛けたもので表されていて、
一般的なエンジンで10～15m/sec、レース用のエンジンでは22～24m/secになります。

ストロークをボア径で割ったもの、つまり、ボアとストロークの比率を【ボア・ストローク比】といいまして、
この値が1より小さいものを【ショートストロークエンジン】と呼ばれ、
逆に1より大きいエンジンを【ロングストロークエンジン】と呼ばれています。
