Fuel Pump Relay problem
I posted before about a problem I have with the fuel pump. It seems to be intermittent, sometimes the fuel pump pressures up with the ignition and sometimes it doesn't ... mostly doesn't!!

I have elimininated the ignition switch and the fuel pump itself which leaves the MAS. I have jumped pins 1&2 and the pump whirrs into life.

So the questions are what does the switching in the MAS? is it a relay or a transistor or what? is it repairable by an enthusiastic amateur? If I need a new one how much? and where from?

Apologies for asking so many questions, but I have one more.... Just where is the fuel pump? although I have eliminated it as a cause I would still like to know where it is. I have dismantled half the back end of the car without success.

Always read codes.
I have no idea on UK prices especially on six cylinders.

The Mass is a module= many relays, etc.

It tells the computer that the engine is on and then tells the pumps.
Get to work. Haha.

It will also race the rpm if the a/c or other stuff are on.
So as you see it does a lot of things.

Now if you thing that it is bad.... soldering the insides with out doing more damage may do the trick.
But how do you know that it is the Mass?

The pumps are located on the right side above the deferential.
They only work for a second, if the engine is not running.

Now go put back the back end. Haha.

Regards,
aam.

Need help debugging fuel pump relay and circuit
Hi folks. I am learning yet again about how the most expensive Mercedes is a cheap one.
I am rebuilding a 1988 190e 2.3 for a friend's 16 year old daughter for her first car. The electrical system and everything else has been badly buggered by some previous owner.
It was running, poorly, when I drove it into the garage a couple weeks ago. I have been trying to straighten out the electrics.

The poor running symptom was easy start but high RPM, and instant death if you touch the gas before warmed up - then works OK but high RPM.

Thanks to all your brilliance, I found a bad fuse in the two-fuse OVP! So excited to see it work right - and at this point, no fuel pumping.

Found that the idiot had cut the fuel pump wiring under the back seat to cable in what might have been an old Motorola in-car phone??? I had taken out that wiring, so no connection to fuel pump. I reconnected fuel pump, pulled Fuel Pump Relay, and jumped power between sockets 8 and 7 (and Positive and 7) and the fuel pump runs (I pulled the fuel tank return line at the motor and see fuel).

But I still don't see fuel when I put the Fuel Pump Relay back in and crank. The engine runs if I pour a little gas or ether in the intake, for a few seconds, but still don't see any fuel flow.

Of course the easy answer is "replace the $130 Fuel Pump Relay" but of course I hope to save that money. Do we have a diagnostic test for the Fuel Pump Relay? What other signals is it relying on before it will click over and give power to the pump?

I don't think a relay should have minded being energized when the output was disconnected. I don't know what would break the relay other than old age.

I have not opened it up yet to look for bad solder. As I said, the thing was working until I fixed the OVP fuse

I was not messing with other wires under the hood, just in the dash and under the back seat.

Fuses in the main fuse box are good. There is another fuse box with a black plastic square cover just in front of the main fuse box, has two pairs of fuses and some relays, any idea what these are for? They are all good.

Oh, I DO see 12V at socket 8 of the Fuel Pump Relay socket when the key is on, so there is power available to send to the pump.

I guess I just need to know what else could inhibit the relay from turning on?

Thanks for your help,

2003 C320 Relay Chart? Fuel pump relay location?
'03 C320 37K miles, stalls immediately after first start attempt.
Fuel pump relay?
Key issue?
Replaced MAF and PPS. Never a CEL, but there was a PPS code. The fuse chart located in the left dash fuse box has no info on relays.
Anyone know where the fuel pump relay is located or have a chart?

Answer
The OVP and Fuel Pump Relay are located behind a plastic shield between the battery and bulkhead.
The OVP (Over Voltage Protection relay) is there to protect the Fuel Pump relay from excessive voltage.
The fuel pump relay is roughly the size of a pack of cigarettes.
