Electric Steering Wheel Lock Fault
Hi
On the way home this evening a red warning light "steering wheel with a pad lock on the top left corner" came on, after parking at home I got the manual out and found that this is an Electric steering-wheel lock fault and now the car will not start.
Does anyone have any ideas or will I need to be tow to the BMW dealer?

I had this problem with my 2008 registered 118i a few months ago.......Informed the BMW dealership and was informed that as I was still able to start my car even though the warning light was on red to bring it in for a computer check !......After about a 4 hour wait all ok........

However !...from time to time still getting a yellow warning light which can be resolved by "jiggling" the steering wheel fm side to side !...if it turns red again I will insist on having a new steering column as my car is still under warranty. I believe a new steering column could cost upwards of ￡500.00 !!!

Just had the steering column replaced on my 3 series touring as steering lock warning on red. Car started and dealer replaced under warranty but said cost was ￡450

Had same thing happen last week - had to be towed home then towed to dealer who have told me that whole steering column needs to be replaced at ￡1000+ . Not happy especially as this column already replaced once under warranty some years ago. Let me know what they say to you about this.

My dealer is distinctly uncommunicative and I'll be using another should I need to. Not happy to hear that someone else had a warranty replacement but now has had to pay for a further replacement, perhaps there's a larger problem here that BMW are not telling us about!?

This was an occasional problem in the first 3ers that came out in 2005-2006 with the electric steering wheel lock as well. Ours was reprogrammed under warranty and the problem has not reoccured.

I reside in Los Angeles, CA, and I just had my steering wheel column replaced 2 days ago and my warranty expired a month ago. I took it to the dealership where I purchased my car and they were kind enough to give me a discount for the replacement + labor.

Why does this happen? I have a 2006 325i with less than 35,000 miles on it... What can I do to prevent this from happening again?
Is it worth purchasing extended warranty?

My friend's 323i had his steering wheel column replaced under warrenty too. 07 model and happened quiet recently. He could not start the car so dealer pick it up with a tow truck to dealer and repaired it under warrenty. I will be pissed if this happen aftter warrentyu run out
I drive 130i and we are in Sydney AUS.

Steering wheel lock yellow light warning
The steering wheel lock yellow light warning on my late 2005 320i appeared about a forthnight ago and despite turning the steering wheel in both direction with the key inside and the engine off, the alert did not disappear.

Just like to know, is the car still safe to drive and if so, will it introduce any damage to the vehicle. My car is not due for service until another couple of months and rather than send it in on the next available slot if I can continue driving till the next service schedule that would be preferable.

Im not really sure of the nature of this fault. It could be dangerous to be driving around with some fault on the steering.. I would call BMW service and check if it is safe to do so.
My mates car would not stsrt at all not allowing him to drive.

Occasional steering locked warninges; car reprogrammed
Occasionally I used to get those "steering locked" yellow warnings (see picture) in my 2006 325i when trying to start the car, usually after the car was parked with a tight right turn into the parking spot (hence the wheels were still turned to the right).

The previous owner had the car repaired over two years ago for (defect code 3232052900) "Electric steering column adjustment ELV sticking/jammed".

I took the car to the dealer today and they reprogrammed the car. Being a software engineer I'm a little suspicious, as a software upgrade can be a way to mask "we don't know what the problem is".

Here is what the dealer invoice said: "48389 Software related did not verify condition as stated. Fault survey performed W/ISTA tester.
Confirmed CAS faults (A112): CAS- ELV Fault & Fault (A116): CAS-critical status, both W/numerous fault occurrence. Performed related test plan given.
Test plan recommended vehicle programming (DIAGCODE: D6100_CAS00000_90_215).
Complete vehicle programming/encoding performed. Initialization of all power windows performed".
(No cost - still under warranty)

They knows there's a problem with the steering column, yet they choose to avoid the subject and ignor the problem until the owner has no choice but to pay and replace column. This could be a maufacturing fault, meaning the fault already existed WHEN we bought the car.

I started having this problem last week. I have a 2006 325i -- out of warranty, of course. At least every 2nd or 3rd time it locks up (today...not amber -- RED. I did get it started after much cursing and somehow getting it back to an amber warning.) I found two TSB references -- #612906 and #613406. Does anyone know where/how to access those?

I have a friend who is getting the steering lock warning message as well as a low voltage message. Any chance these two are related? I was thinking an alternator issue before finding this thread.

A116 ELV ECU Abrubtion Error
This topic apllies to
BMW 3-series E9x
Complaint
ELV control light is on
Faultcode A116 "ELV ECU abruption error" stored in Car Acces System:
ELV Steering column won't unlock
The car cannot be driven
Repair
Use the command to reset ELV ECU counter from CAS commandconsole in BT
After the reset the ELV Steering column will unlock and the car can be driven
Replace ELV Steering column
Check for new software for the ELV ECU at the dealer

I hadn't even put the thing in gear yet.
I drove to a gas station (car drove 100% normally) and turned off the car, then tried to retsart.
True to it's word, it would not restart.
Steering wheel was locked and it wouldn't let me move the shifter.

I hit the "SOS" button and got connected to BMW Customer Service. They said I had to get flat-bedded to dealer. I was late for a meeting and decided to try something else, so I disconnected the battery and reconnected.
No more ELV fault, car started up fine. I did, however get a yellow Transmission fault warning (and a window anti-trap warning). Those two warnings went away and may have been related to the power disconnect.

Car drove 100% normally. I just dropped off to dealer and will let you know what they say.
Weird.
I did a little Googling on this , and it appears that the E90 had a similar problem, perhaps linked to Comfort Access (which I have). One thread suggested a software patch fixed this. I'm not sure what SW version I am on.
Anyone else experience this?

Electronic Steering Wheel Lock Fault
I have the same problem as of 2/3/2011 on a 325i 2006. I spoke to BMW and they state they have "NO RECALLS" unless issued by NHTSA.

My suggestion is that everyone that has had this problem file a complaint ASAP under "STEERING" with the NHTSA making sure you have your VIN#. Please file your complaint with the NHTSA: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/ The more complaints, the more likely this issue would be investigated and BMW would be forced to deal with it.

車を走らせていると、何度かシートベルトのセンサーが誤作動を始めました。高速を足立区の加平で降りて、信号待ちの際にエンジンをリスタートさせようとすると、エンジンがかかりません。ハンドルロックがかかった状態になり、エンジンスタートボタンを何度押しても反応なし。
やむなく三角版を出して、エマージェンシーコールに連絡。「ハンドルをガチャガチャ動かしてください」という本気！？と思うような対応策を実施してもＮＧのため、保険会社のロードサービスを利用

オレンジアラームとレッドアラームで重症度が違うそうです。
今回はオレンジアラームなのでプログラムの書き換えで何とかなりそうです。そのプログラムの書き換えが失敗して今日は車がかえってきませんでした。ネットでは交換したケースとプログラム書き換えで直ったケースがあるみたいです。どうなることやら・・・。

内部 ELV 不具合カウンター リセット
エレクトリック ステアリング ホィール ロックの交換後、内部 ELV 不具合カウンターをリセットし、カー アクセス システムのコントロール ユニット リセットを実行する必要があります。不具合カウンターが最大カウンター レベルに達すると、エレクトリック ステアリング ホィール ロックをロック解除できなくなります。Kl.15 の切替えを行うことができなくなります。
注意事項：
エレクトリック ステアリング ホィール ロックの交換後にのみ、サービス機能を実行することができます!

以前シビックのSirよりしたのクラスだが
VtiってクラスのVTECにのっていたので一言。
VTEC=可変バルブタイミングリフト機構で
低スピード時のトルク重視用低速カムと
高スピード用のパワー重視用高速カムが
切り替わる瞬間があり、高速カムに切り替わると
圧倒的なパワーが発生し、クルマが急加速します。
（私の車では約４千５百回転くらいで切り替わりました）
その切り替わりの瞬間を言ってるのでは。。
その当時、プレリュードって言うホンダのスポーツ（？）タイプクーペ
がありましたが、たしか２２００CCで２００PS発生させるのに
低速・中速・高速カムの３段階の切り替わりがあると持ち主がいってました。
