steering wheel lock issue
So yesterday I was leaving work and I go to start the car and I get this alert on the console with a picture of the steering wheel and a lock and the car won't start. The odd thing was that I was able to move the wheel freely so it clearly wasn't locked, even though it thought it was.
So after about 10 minutes of trying to get it to work I conceded defeat and hit the SOS button to get BMW service.

They tell me to try moving the wheel with my foot on the brake. I tried, but no luck. So they dispatched a truck out to me to see if they could jump it and if not then tow me to my nearest dealer.
So since I had an hour to kill before they got to me I decided to F with it a bit more. After about 3-4 minutes I got it started. Here's what I did in case anyone else encounters this.

I basically retraced my steps like I just got in the car:
1) Locked the car
2) Unlocked the car. At this time, the steering wheel was actually locked, I couldn't move it much.
3) I then started the car successfully.
Again, I just wanted to pass this on in case somebody else runs into this.

An old issue. Try a search and you'll see this is a common problem. Newer E9x don't even have the steering wheel lock anymore, presumably because it was buggy on so many cars. Mine has been perfect so far (knocking on wood).

Seach is your friend. This was common on early '06 3xx. I had my steering column replaced at 15k miles under warranty because of the steering lock issue. No problems since then.

Replace the steering column under warranty before you get stuck again.
I also had the similar problem at about 15K

Cool thanks everyone. I'm a big fan of the "search" button, but completely forgot about it this morning...
Anyway, I'll bring it up with the dealer.

The light came on and the car started fine, the first time It came on I made an appt to go to the dealer the next morning, it started fine when i took it to the bank, when i drove back from the bank, and when I drove home. But the next morning i was unable to drive it to the dealer and had to have it towed, they had to reprogram my car and replace the steering column, 5 days Hope they fix it faster for you BUT DEF!! take it there ASAP as for me it was a pain in the ass.

I have an Aug 06 build 330i with ~18k miles, and was suffering both from a succession of the yellow warning light showing steering wheel sometimes in conjunction with a grinding noise from inside the steering column on key insert.
Brought it to dealership Monday and they insisted that my VIN indicated that I did not need a new steering column, only a software update. They had it 24 hours to do the update and

I picked up car yesterday pm.
Inserted the key first thing this morning and the familiar grinding noise came from inside the steering column. Called service advisor who was apologetic - car is going in again for a replacement steering column.
So beware the "software only" fix...

I first experienced this problem 3 months ago. Since then it has happened twice more. I did the door lock and unlock trick to get it to reset each time. I'm at 30k so I'm going to take the advice of the fellow members and bring it in for warrenty service to get it taken care of once and for all...

So I brought the car in and they did the software update and said it's "fixed" This was coming directly from the master tech turned SA. Then 6 days later as I'm about to take my kids on a field trip it happened again. This time they replaced the steering column. The SA told me that there were 2 other cars in for service for the same thing.
Now it's been about 3 weeks and it's all good.

Recently I posted a thread about my brakes getting locked,
and unfortunately another 'lock' problem has occurred.
When I stick my remote into the key fob, the car comes up with an error in the display that looks like a steering wheel with a lock on it.
It takes me about 5-10 minutes 'til the car decides it wants to "unlock."

Anyone know what's up?
Thanks a lot.

issue with the CAS module and/or the ELV steering column.
the column is locked with an electric solenoid. the CAS module controls it. it's about a 50/50 shot between a bad CAS module, and a bad steering column.
2011/10/22(土) 午前 1:07返信する
I've done about 4 steering columns, and about 3 CAS modules, so it can be either or. the car's under warranty, right? take it to the dealer. We've worked on several cars that the thing totally failed, and the car would not start. that's usually the CAS module.

Had the same thing happen to my e90 back in Dec06. It started off yellow and eventually turned red. Once it turns red the car will not start. I took it into the dealership and they ended up replacing a module manufactured by Puma. Troubleshooting and repair took about 4 days. Fortunately, I haven't had anymore problems with it...knock on wood! Good luck.

It's actually the ELV module that needs to be replaced. It happens to only come with a steering column.

ELV Steering Lock Fault" message - car disabled
Just had a weird problem. I fired up the car and immediately got a red error message:
[paraphrasing] "ELV Steering Lock Fault. Do not turn off Engine. Car will not restart." I hadn't even put the thing in gear yet. I drove to a gas station (car drove 100% normally) and turned off the car, then tried to retsart.
2011/10/22(土) 午前 1:15返信する
True to it's word, it would not restart. Steering wheel was locked and it wouldn't let me move the shifter.
I hit the "SOS" button and got connected to BMW Customer Service. They said I had to get flat-bedded to dealer. I was late for a meeting and decided to try something else, so I disconnected the battery and reconnected.

No more ELV fault, car started up fine. I did, however get a yellow Transmission fault warning (and a window anti-trap warning). Those two warnings went away and may have been related to the power disconnect.
Car drove 100% normally. I just dropped off to dealer and will let you know what they say.
Weird.

I did a little Googling on this , and it appears that the E90 had a similar problem, perhaps linked to Comfort Access (which I have). One thread suggested a software patch fixed this. I'm not sure what SW version I am on.
Anyone else experience this?

Dealer is ordering me a new "GO Module" from Germany. Has something to do with Comfort Access. They advised me to drive with key in the ignition until part can be replaced.

Gah! This just happened to me. What a night......I was closing up my business and went to pull my car up front to my shop to load some stuff into the car. Started up and got the ELV message on the screen.
Had to have one of my employees sit in my running car just so I could lock up the shop so I could drive home. To make matters worse some strange guy in a truck was sitting across the street eyeing me and my car (guess i'll be driving my beater to work for the next few weeks).
2011/10/22(土) 午前 1:21返信する
Got home, pulled into garage and tried to restart... no dice.
Ran upstairs, booted up the comp, and came straight to this invaluable site.
Running back downstairs now to see if wiggling the steering wheel and sticking the FOB in the keyhole will work. Wish me luck.........
2011/10/22(土) 午前 1:22返信する
ec8r1: If the wiggling doesn't work, disconnecting the battery probably will. You get some additional errors, but they all clear up quickly (roll down all windows, then rollup for window trap).
Someone here suggested that disconnecting the battery could be harmful. I can't imagine that the car would be designed so as to not (for example) allow you to change the battery, so I did not sweat it.
I have had no problems since, and DO NOT drive with CA fob in the "ignition."
