Brake switch already changed - BAS/ESP ETS and other lights on
I have a 2000 ML320 with the bas/esp, ets, srs, and check engine lights on and have read several threads concerning these lights and have already changed the brake switch which did not eliminate the bas/esp and ets problem.
I might add that the cruise control does not work.
The dealer states that I need a sensor that is in the brake booster but will have to purchase new booster at $632 as sensor does not come separate.
They also stated that I would need a steering angle sensor in which the whole steering column would need to be replaced at $411.
My questions are as follows :

1. Is there a sensor available without the purchase of the booster? If so where would I find one?
2. Is there a way to change the steering angle sensor without changing the entire steering column?

I had the following codes appear during diagnostics. I hope they can help determine the problems.

RE: Brake switch already changed - BAS/ESP ETS and other lights on
That is one heck of a list of codes.

I notice the AAM and the DAS both stored codes. That could be nothing or it could mean the AAM and one of your keys are not happy with each other.

As far as the ESP codes and there being a BAS code stored I would have to agree that a sensor problem does exist for real.

Whether or not the parts can be obtained with buying a whole unit will take some research.
I would defiantely look to the aftermarket for some other opinions. The dealer is going to ring up one hell of a tab on that list.

Thanks for the info. I should have noted that the steering wheel, acually whole column is very loose. Probably will go ahead and let the dealer do the steering column and may do the brake booster myself. I do not expect it to be too difficult. I actually found one on www.car-part.com for $200 for the master cylinder and brake booster. By the way this is a great source for finding used parts as it connects you to several hundred salvage yards across the U.S.

one of the forum members (do a search) changed the brake light switch but realized he had depressed the switch plunger - make sure it's not. And, as for cruise control check the rear brake light bulbs (all three) first. Eliminate simple things.

As far as a loose steering column...hmm...that's a hard one. May require the change...

Hi mbell321,

I am wondering if you have any updates on your problem and how you fixed it?

EAP/BAS Lights on
My 2000 ML430 has the lights on issue... My mechanic told me I need another Control unit. I found a company on EBay who repairs them. My Bid is under $100 which includes shipping. I will update you on how that goes soon.

The Traction Control Module is located in the fuse/relay box.

The traction controls and ABS, etc. systems are very complicated and problematic. You can do as you choose by taking the advice of your mechanic, but you should try a few things first before replacing the module.

1. Without your foot on the brake, start the truck. Are the lights on?
2. Now step on the brake. Are the lights on?
3. Move the truck a short distance. Do the lights come on?
4. While moving turn the wheel in both directions. Do the lights come on?

This is why I asked you to explain in detail.

While the truck is running turn the steering wheel all the way to one side and then the other and see if the lights go out. A restart might be necessary.

If that doesn't work, try the more detailed procedure below.
