Electric car from Italy
This neat-looking electric can do 40m.p.h. and cruise for about 200miles on a charge. Called the Rowan, the prototype shown was built by the Rowan, Controller Corp., with a Ghia-designed body and mechanical com-ponents by DeTomaso Automobili of Italy. The car has front disk brakes; at the rear, its two electric motors act as brakes. It's lO feet long, and five feet wide. Batteries (right)feed current to the motors(under the rear seats)through a "control box.” AUGUST 1968 79

But then came the seventies, with their oil crises. And the idea of a small city car, independent of petrol, was rapidly dusted off again. All the major Italian carrozzerias tried their luck with this type of vehicle.

Michelotti teamed up with British electric motor manufacturer Crompton to design a car for British Leyland, based on a shortened Mini but unsuccessful. They tried it again with the Michelotti Lem – for Laboratorio Elettrico Mobile, that, strangely, was designed by a journalist, Gianni Rogliatti. Again, it was no success.

If you have as much talent and money as
you have ambition, and put in the rest of
the Hot Dog parts,Such as a cam kit and
a better clutch,you'll have a pretty-good-
running little car.But actually more of a
looker than a runner.

new gears helped some. Frankly, this cruise
control is of little value to me. What do
you suggest?”

You asked me,so I'll say-unhook the
control and forget it. I don't feel they
should even be allowed on a car. You'll
find the experts on this gadget at your
dealership. It is certaily too complicated
a gadget to second-guess the solution of
the problem from only a brief description
and from a distance.

"My 1961 Studebaker six gets only eight-
nine m.p.g. and stumbles badly on slow, off-
throttle right-hand turns. I put on a manual
choke and clamped shut the heat tube. The
choke definitely doesn't stick, the engine has
new points and plugs properly installed. and

doesn't overheat. The heat riser works
properly and varied driving habits show no
change in gas mileage. The float level is
correct, but I still think the trouble is in the
carb. Would a kit help? Before putting on
manual choke I was getting 20 to 25 m.p.g."

Joe,you have goofed up the distributor
advance and probably the high-end mixture,
too. Go back over that earburetor and set
it to factory specs or, better still. run it
into a tune-up shop and get a reasonable
mileage back. Maybe you can save that engine before it is too late.

I'm driving on the original
Firestone rubber, with 23,000 miles on and
about 1/3 of the tread left, and I carry 30
pounds of air in them. Wheel bearings have
been repacked, front end lined up, all wheels
rebalanced, and new heavy一duty shocks in-
stalled-but no relief. Is this sway a built-
in problem with Buick?”
