An Oldham coupling has three discs, one coupled to the input, one coupled to the output, and a middle disc that is joined to the first two by tongue and groove. The tongue and groove on one side is perpendicular to the tongue and groove on the other. The middle disc rotates around its center at the same speed as the input and output shafts. Its center traces a circular orbit, twice per rotation, around the midpoint between input and output shafts.

Often springs are used to reduce backlash of the mechanism. An advantage to this type of coupling, as compared to two universal joints, is its compact size. The coupler is named for John Oldham who invented it in Ireland, in 1821, to solve a paddle placement problem in a paddle steamer design.

2005 E320 CDI - No Start
Car would not start one day. No previous symptoms. Since no start, has been sitting in the garage for 3-4 months. After a fully charged battery the starter is turning at the right RPM, but the engine doesn't even try to start.

In tank fuel pump is bringing lots of fuel to the filter which looks newer, and i cracked an injector line on the common rail and it has lots of fuel there as well. Fuel rail pressure when cranking according to my MaxiDas scantool shows 475-500bar. Spec is 430-470bar.

Fuel is confirmed diesel.

When checking injector pulse, i get good injector pulse for 4-6 pulses, and then it stops pulsing. I am assuming the ECU is seeing the misfire and shutting them down.

Compression check reveals pretty even compression readings from 325-375psi. Mostly around 375psi. I checked cylinders #2, #3, and #6. The only ones my tester would fit in easily.

With my noid light hooked up to an injector, and the glow plug removed, the compression and injector pulse seem to be in time.

The car is inside the garage at 10-20*C so the glow plugs I am ignoring for now.

Codes are as follows.

2197-4 Quantity control valve signal line interipted (Y94)
2679-4 Fuel filter water level sensor faulty (found this one unplugged)

The glow plug faults are hard faults.

2136-4 Glow plug 4 fault
2137-4 Glow plug 5 fault
2138-4 Glow plug 6 fault

After being cleared, the following return after 1 or 2 starting attempts.

0190-1 Fuel rail pressure sensor voltage too high (B4/6)
2500-4 Pressure control valve signal interupted (Y74)
2051-1 Fuel rail pressure low

I can't find any information on this car so any help is appreciated.

To add..

No fuel coming from the return side of all 6 injectors.

From the codes and high rail pressure reading, I will start w/Pressure control valve – check for chewed up cables (who knows). For now, you can ignore 0190-1 because pressure reading is transferred in electrical signal, thus high voltage.

Injectors are closed – no fuel passes through, thus no extra fuel for returning.

As far as the pressure control valve. Is this the same unit as the quantity control valve?

Do you know where it is located and how to test it?

Engine is cranking but the ECU keeps injectors closed, those are not the old type mechanical injectors.
Pressure control valve – on the back of the fuel rail, close to the firewall.
Quantity control valve – next to the HPFP, on the front of the engine.

Testing - Xentry.

Thanks for the locations.

If pressure is correct (470-500BAR) at the fuel rail when compared to the spec 430-470bar, then it would seem as though the pressure control valve would be working properly, correct?

Would the pressure control valve, or quantity control valve prevent the engine from starting, or even trying to start?

It may, even some codes that are stored can do that until you erase them.

Y94 quantity control valve is reading 40% with key on, but goes to 0% immediately when cranking the engine. This is read from my maxidas scan tool.

The spec for this value is 30-34%

Does this sound right?
