On Single VANOS, only the intake camshaft is controlled. When the control solenoid is energized, the intake camshaft is advance. When the solenoid is de-energized, spring tension forces the intake camshaft back into the retarded position. On Dual VANOS, both the intake and exhaust camshafts are controlled.
