On my way back to the dyno I gave the throttle a couple of blips and could instantly feel the difference, and the Actron scanner was now registering 64 lb/hr through the MAF sensor.

After the session, we were shocked to see over 470 whp through the auto tranny. This may answer the question behind our 54 lb/hr MAF readings, which would indicate roughly 540 hp. Renntech even tells us that the ’03 Mayach 57, rated at 550 hp, doesn’t make more boost than an S600, and is the same. Still, 470 whp through the auto tranny for a 493-hp car is definite sandbagging by Mercedes.

4. Read the Mass Airflow (MAF) output on scanner data stream while driving. At idle in Park/Neutral (P/N), the output should be 3.0-4.5 grams/second (g/s) or 8-13 kilograms/hour (Kg/H). At 2000 RPM in P/N, 8-12 g/s or 25-40 Kg/H. Drive vehicle at 40 MPH, then apply wide open throttle. Reading on the scanner should immediately go to 120 g/s or 440 Kg/H.

I have eventually managed to extract some info from WIS as to test values for the MAF, couldn't find it for the 112.943 engine in mine so used data for the 112.921/941/920/940 which has to be pretty close?

The figures quoted are

idle - 10-20 kg/h
road load at 5300 rpm - 480 -580 kg/h

my results from Carsoft are - 

idle - 12 kg/h
road load at 5300rpm - 116 kg/h

Also tested at 2000rpm - 32 kg/h
3000 - 72 kg/h
4000 - 100 kg/h
6000 - 240 kg/h

These are pointing me more towards faulty MAF, but I find the quoted 480 - 580 kg/h at 5300rpm a very high figure. In comparison I know the figures for my wife's Range Rover 4.6 to be 90-100 kg/h at 3000rpm with no load. I know the RR only produces the same bhp as the merc so there shouldn't be too much of a difference in the figures - should there?

Which would also suggest that 72kg/h under load is also a bit low. The cars done 105k so a new MAF probably wouldn't be such a bad thing, especially as I will cover about 50k over the next 2 years in it.

btw the document from WIS is for testing engine output under road load and gives the parameters as -

The stock MAF output is NOT linear to flow, and maxs out at 800 kg/h (from the factory specs) or about 385 CFM.

Have you filled with fresh fuel yet Allen?

If your scan tool can read actual values then see if you can read the voltage from the O2 sensor - you should see it switching from around 0.1 - 1.0 volts.

O2 readings look good - the upstream one is what is used by the ECU to ensure the fueling is correct.

I've educated myself a bit since we last spoke. I understand the closed/open loop issue and confirm that the 02 sensor is on spec. For a brief moment after warmup but before the malfunction kicks in I get good readings of the 02 sensor - fluctuating

While there I picked up a link to data published by Bosch for their Mafs. I saw that the range for this Maf was likely 

8-370 kg/hr. I did the math....3600 seconds to the hr and the upper end of the range of the maf would be about .1 kg/sec move the decimal point 3 places to get grams and you get an upper range of about 100 grams /sec. My readings were 12 grams/sec at 3000rpm while in nuetral.

On the highway at WOT in passing mode (kick down on the tranny) I got up to 55 gr/sec. This would be clearly out of range by at least a factor of two, probably much more and certainly logically a likely cause of the lean condition.

I also read on the benzworld threads about maf cleaning - I got a can of crc maf cleaner took the sensor head out of the barrel and no joy :( After reading all the threads about the poor performance of the aftermarket parts I really got your point about about new oem.

Then if we know that M62 have Flow at Max. Speed @ 1.8 Bar: 810 cubic meters / hour , and if we know that 230kompressor engine pulls arround 700 kg of air/hour at full throttle and full rpms, then it is obviosly that our M62 IS more than 100 % CAPABLE to make 1,8 BAR at full throotle (engine uses only 700 kg of air and M62 pushes 810 cubic meters). So where is missing 1,2 BAR (1,8-0,6)?

Now calculate kg/hour into cubic meters/hour


If i am not mistaken, than 700 kg of air/ 1 hour is equal 542 cubic meters of air / 1 hour, if we know that 1 cubic meter of air weights 1,29 kg. So our M62 is more than adequat (810 cubic meters/hour at 1,8 BAR) to feed our engine which uses aproximately 542 cubic meters of air/h.

Please some one correct me if i am wrong.

So, now i am 100% sure that something (possibly bypass valve) is letting out all boost which is greater than 0,6 BAR at the manifold. Now the question is how to convince bypass valve that it does not open at 0,6 BAR, but at cca 1 BAR??

Computer diagnostic indicate that air/mass ratio was high at 16 kg/hr but after resetting by the diagnostic m/c supplier, it went down to 12-13kg/hr (although it shoots up when the AC is on to 15-16kg/hr again). The supplier said that 12 is the typical value.

Ah T thought it was the AMF but putting in a new one didn't help either.

I am testing the new engine these few days. Most times after running a while on the road, output is weak and response to accelerator is flat unless I floor it.

There seem to be a drag only the engine has warmed up. I also noticed that temperature above 80 deg C (it was usually below 80 deg C with the old engine) the problem is more evident. From your notes, I am not sure if it is temperature related to the ECU controls or if the ECU cannot recognize the new engine .... ???

別段これと言った、自覚症状は特になし。
アイドリングが不安定とか、シフトアップ時の大きなショックも無い。 しいて言うならば、アイドリング時の500回転付近での、タコ・メーターの微妙な揺れぐらいであろうか? (これは、O2センサーの不良の前兆との説もある。
ちなみに、エアマス不具合に起因する典型的な兆候は、ここに記載されている。
