vag-com: 17584 O2s correction behind catalyst limit reached, P1176. please help!!!

2012/4/11(水) 午後 10:13返信する
hi i just got the vag-com and the necessary cable and tested my mom's 01 golf 1.8t, cause it had a CEL for a month, and got the following:
17584 Bank1 O2S correction behind catalyst control limit reached P1176 35-00
i know it has to do a lot with the rear o2 sensor and the a/f ratio. i searched extensively and found that there's been codes like that in the past (shocker!) but no real solution.... the car is stock, no chip, 150hp. 2001 1.8T auto.
2012/4/11(水) 午後 10:16返信する
my questions are:
- how do i test if the actual o2 sensor is good or bad? (will the procedure 01-04-036 work in this case)? i don't want to change it and find it wasn't the problem. i will if needed.
- if the sensor is good what is causing the wrong a/f mixture ratio?
2012/4/11(水) 午後 10:16返信する
don't flame, i searched and read a lot. i also read the whole ross-tech user guide and faq sections. and no, i don't have a "bentley" manual. what can i do. my guesses are:
- bad o2 sensor
- bad dv valve (not circulating the proper amount of air and messing up the mixture). i already chaged that once with the upgraded 2003+ "N" version"
- intake, boost, vacuum leak somewhere, but where?
please help me with some useful info if someone is informed of what can be done. thanks in advance

update bump:
yeasterday the "readiness" test in the vag showed "Secondary Air Injection - failed or incomplete". what does that mean?
2012/4/11(水) 午後 10:18返信する
also i can't access group 34 and 36 to test the o2 sensors separately (my vag is apparently shareware), but they passed the "readiness" test. what kinda problem am i looking for? could it be the SAP (secondary air pump); it is a little noisy but i know this thing is irrelevant once the car's warmed up, and the CEL comes on after a little driving, not at start up
please give me some ideas....

Are you using a genuine Vag-com lead?
if not - i have no sympathy.

you're saying it can't be the o2. i cleared the codes the other day and the CEL has not come back on yet. what is that secondary air injection that "failed"? SAP maybe...

Correct me if I'm wrong but that is the loud winding sound that runs for about a minute at the startup of a cold engine. I guess if you interrupt the system by driving or turning off your car, the process does not complete and can throw your engine light on.

the SAI problem i had in my car (p0411 code IIRC) turned out to be a hose that had gone bad.

you're absolutely right! and that pump had increased the whine in the past few months. it only does it when ambient temperatures are low. and this is just a start-up procedure - after the 100secs it stops and the car should be ready to be driven. idk if either of my parents didn't wait on day and left without letting it stop whining, but i doubt that's gonna trigger a CEL.
what's a good place to get SAP anyway? scrap yards...

i have the same code on a 2001 aww 1.8t golf...i am replacing both o2 sensors in the next week or two...i think this will get rid of the codes AND increase my gas mileage...
i used to get 23-26 with mixed driving...now i'm getting 20-22...i think it's running to rich because of the rear o2 sensor failure

so best solutoin is to change the post-cat o2 sensor. what is a good deal to get one of those. i checked the dealership's price is $250+tax. mjmautohouse.com have those babies for $125 or so for the AWP (2000-2001 MKIV 1.8T) engines. is that good? any other suggestions...

i got mine at ecstuning, where they have a lot of fairly priced items for vw's
also, sorry about the double post earlier---don't know how that happened...
on the previous poster's link to the other person who had the same fault code, then replaced the MAF, then cleared the CEL by driving like he stole it----
i have a vag com and clear the CEL, and it comes back invariably after 100-300 miles of driving---even if i drive like i stole it....the MAF was already replaced as well

at ecs tuning, both of the o2 sensors total to $200....so i'll just replace both while i change the exhaust system to a maxpsi (magnaflo) setup

ok, i'm gonna order the o2 sensor (only the rear one though) and the green top cvoolant sensor - people are telling me it's a good thing to change and get the correct temp readings for a better fuel economy and smoother engine performance

aren't generic VAGCOM cables just great!
if you had a REAL VAG COM cable, you know EXACTLY what you need to replace....not guessing like you are now.
so, just how much is a REAL tool worth?

I have a problem with my wife's Jetta, which has recently failed inspection for emissions reasons. Last week, I successfully diagnosed and replaced a bad MAF sensor which was giving me the typical "Fuel Trim Too Lean" DTC, as well as replacing the DV, which was fluttering a bit.
After a week of driving the car, the CEL came back on, and yesterday's scan revealed the following DTC:
VAG-COM Version: Release 607.3-UD

Now, going through the Measuring Blocks, the only thing that seemed out of place was one reading in Group 037. The "Lambda Regulator Dwell Period" was measured as -0.031. According to the label file, it would seem that the specified range for this value is -0.02 <--> 0.02 ms. Otherwise, the computer says that both O2 sensors pass their tests, so I'm confused as to what the problem really is.
2012/4/11(水) 午後 10:42返信する
From what I have been able to gather in my searches of VWvortex so far, it seems that I need to do further diagnosis of both O2 sensors and the catalyst to pin down the true source of the problem, but I haven't found any documentation of the testing procedures. It would also seem from my searches that this may be a relatively common problem, so I'm surprised not to find more documentation.

A summary of what Bentley has to say on this:
Check oxygen sensor aging oxygen sensor after catalyst.
- Coolant temp at least 80C.
2012/4/11(水) 午後 10:46返信する
- Basic Settings, Group 043.
- Run engine at 1800-2200 rpm and maintain until field 4 goes to "Test On". Cat temp in field 2 must be at least 300C. Eventually it will either tell you that the sensor is OK or not. If not:
-Road test vehicle to free oxygen sensor of possible residues and repeat test. In other words, drive it like you stole it for a while.
If none of this works, replace the sensor.

Thanks for the reply, Uwe.
I finall got the Jetta back from my wife yesterday. The first time I ran the test, it failed. Then I cleared the DTC's and re-tested OK.
I've been driving around like a maniac all over NJ and PA for the last two days (I-195 from the PA Tpke to Reading and back is a fun ride!), and managed to get the cat heated up to 800-825 deg. C. The Group 037 "Lambda Regulator Dwell Period" seems to be holdng pretty steady at -0.008 to -0.012 ms.
2012/4/11(水) 午後 10:51返信する
All readiness tests have passed, and no more DTCs have appeared, so I guess it's off to the inspection station.
I suspect that running for so long with a bad MAF gunked up the works, and it just needed a bit of time and flogging to clear out the cat and sensors.

17584 and 16523

I pasted the auto scan below. I've been getting 17584 for a while and I just recently got 16523. Not worried about 17987; that was because I interrupted the Throttle adaptation. Took care of that. Re the other codes, I'm tempted to go ahead and replace the rear O2 sensor, but from what I gather an air leak could also be the problem, though I can't see one anywhere. Thoughts?
