P1632 code any ideas?
Hi,
Got in the car today, started it ....
it started shaking.....shut it off.
try again.....same thing
try again......runs fine.
Check engine light -> auto zone
pulled code P1632
Autozone printout said Smart alternator faults/circuit malfunction
Bently manual says Throttle valve adaptation conditions not met.

Very discriptive

Don't trust the AutoZone printout for DTCs starting with P1 or higher. Each manufacturer assigns their own meaning to these codes. The description AutoZone gave you may be for a Chevy. (They are OK for DTCs starting with P0. Those have the same meaning regardless of manufacturer.)

Your car has an electrically operated throttle valve. During start-up, the DME operates the valve to assure it will respond correctly to the accelerator pedal. I believe that DTC means that the throttle valve is not operating the way the DME "thinks" it should. It may be sticking, or have a failing stepper motor, or a loose connection on the motor or position sensor (not sure if it actually has one of those).

That's what I think. A throttle body ain't cheap, so please verify my diagnosis before spending any money throwing parts at the problem.

Question
I have a 2001 BMW 525i that stalled off the lights with the SLM light coming on the dash and no throttle response.
I checked with OBD-II code reader and have P1638, P1639 and
P1632 codes being displated.
Is the throttle body housing need replacing, or what am I to check

Accepted Answer

Hello,

Sound like your electronic throttlebody has gone bad.
It needs to be replaced, codes erased and adaptations reset.
This can only be done at a dealer or a BMW specialist.
Before you do that just make sure that all the fuses in the ebox fuse carrier are good.
If F1, check for shorted cooling thermostat (cooling map circuit).
I don't think this is your problem since you don't have any codes for map cooling circuit, but I have seen this happen with this symptom and it is worth checking before you start replacing a part.
Good luck
