Basic Setting
Caution!
Do not perform any of these Basic Settings while the brakes are disassembled! Opening, closing, function tests, and otherwise cycling the Electronic Parking brakes should only be done with the pads and calipers properly installed on the rotors.
Please follow the procedures EXACTLY. There's a reason for every step.

It is strongly recommended to run a full Auto-Scan first thing to check for any preexisting faults! There have been several reports of repair shops damaging the Electronic Parking Brake System when trying to do rear brakes, but not telling the customer and then sending the car out the door.

Open Rear Parking Brake
Prerequisites:
Connect a battery charger as per repair manual.
Ignition on, engine off.
Cycle the Parking Brake ON, then OFF first. The normal hydraulic brake pedal must be applied before the EPB will operate.

The Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) in the Passat replaces the usual handbrake. Since the conventional handbrake lever is no longer necessary, this creates more storage space between the front seats. The EPB is operated by means of two geared electric motors on the rear disc brakes.

An operating noise from the EPB also indicates that the brake is being applied. In addition to ease of operation by means of a large button (to the left of the rotary light switch), the EPB also offers various additional comfort and safety functions. For example, the dynamic automatic brake release, makes manual release of the parking brake superfluous. All the driver needs to do is to drive off and the EPB is released automatically.

I've read that the passat's parking brake is a push button system. What happens if your car battery dies? Is it some sort of switch that is off-on when you apply juice to the parking brake? How does it work? Not that the passat diesel is here yet, but I'd like to get one.

The worse case would be if when you lose power, it automatically applies the parking brake so if main power ever cuts out, the parking brake might cause the rear wheels to lock up.

EPB Apply
The EPB can be applied anytime the vehicle is stopped. The EPB is applied by momentarily lifting up on the P switch. Once fully applied, the Electric Parking Brake Light will be on. While the brake is being applied, the Electric Parking Brake Light will flash until full apply is reached. If the light does not come on, or remains flashing, have the vehicle serviced. Do not drive the vehicle if the Electric Parking Brake Light is flashing. See your dealer.

If the EPB is applied while the vehicle is in motion, a chime will sound, and the DIC message RELEASE PARKING BRAKE will be displayed. The vehicle will decelerate as long as the switch is held in the up position.
Releasing the switch during the deceleration will release the parking brake. If the P switch is held in the up position until the vehicle comes to a stop, the EPB will remain applied.

If the Electric Parking Brake Light flashes continuously, the EPB is only partially applied or released, or there is a problem with the EPB. The DIC message SERVICE PARKING BRAKE will be displayed. If this light flashes continuously, release the EPB, and attempt to apply it again. If this light continues to flash, do not drive the vehicle. See your dealer.
If the Service Electric Parking Brake Light is on, the EPB has detected a system problem and is operating with reduced functionality.

It's caused by the slight camber of the rear wheels and inaccurate tracking alignment of the "axles" at the factory. This was on my B6 Passat, I have only done 12,000 miles in the new B7 so don't know if it will happen again of if VW have sorted it. I had a massive battle with VW UK over it and they ended up paying for an alignment.
