ABSの事例で国産と外車でその事例の傾向が違う感じもしている。
国産でもある種もテストでMILが点灯するが、其の点灯タイミングとか、それを復帰させる過程での
状況に違いがある。 これらをシステム･シーケンス（プログラムなど）に微妙な味付けの違いがある。
ABSのシステムを作ってメーカーは複数あるが、オリジナルのシステムを持ている所は数えるぐらいしかない。 それでもOEMとかパテントの供与とか製造メーカーの関わりは複雑なようだ。これらの系譜も機会をみてサーチしておきたい。 そのような状況なので、各社の症状の発生状況も似ていたり、似ていなかったりと多様でもある。
まだ外車ほど複雑なケースは少ないが、ABSが統合的に使われてきている昨今では注目しておきたい。
国産ではMILの点灯が単純なセンサ系の誤信号が多かった。 回転センサ、BK系信号に起因したりするケースは良く聞かれた。 ABS UNITに関わるものは、まだ少ない。
これに対し外車では ABS UNITに起因するものが多く紹介されている。 これらのUNITには
ABS-ECUが内蔵されており、その基板に関わるものが注目されるものもある。 さらには
車内LAN（CANなど）で相互に各種のECUが連携しており、それらに間接的に影響を及ぼすものもある。
これらは事例が参考になるのでより多くサーチしておきたい。

Question
My 1994 volvo has 78,000 miles on it and the Volvo service people tell me that the ABS contol unit has failed and needs to be replaced at a cost of about $900.
This is the second ABS control unit that has failed.
In 1998, when the car had only 32,000 miles on it, the ABS control unit failed and had to be replaced.
My questions are:
Is it safe to drive without replacing the ABS unit?
IIs this model known for this type of problem because it seems ridiculous that two ABS control units have gone bad at 78,000 miles.
I've contacted Volvo corporate and they tell me there is nothing they can or will do about the problem.
The Volvo service dealer says they got codes:
213 - Left wheel sensor, signal absent.
214 - Right wheel sensor, signal absent
142 - Brake switch open short or open circuit short.
I'd appreciate any advice or insight you can give me.

you did not write your car type, but I think it is 850.
Yes, according to the codes the ABS control unit should be replaced with new one.
You can drive the car without ABS with safety.
Think that your car has no ABS, that is same...
When the ABS lamp lights the system will not work, but if it does not light the system will work, that is another point you should know...

As long as the replacement part came from the correct car then there should be no fault lights present. If you do get an ASC warning then the controller will need recoding by BMW or someone who has the capabilities (CarSoft cannot be used to recode).
