When this fault is stored and external vacuum leaks are not found, less obvious problems may be present:
Check Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Regulator Valve (N80)
Check Brake Booster and Hoses
Check Electric Vacuum Pump ( If Applicable )
Check Crankcase Ventilation System for faulty components. When the PCV or Crankcase Ventilation System is faulty, vacuum is typically present under the oil cap and misfire faults are common.

フォルクスワーゲン ゴルフ4 エンジンチェックランプ点灯
前回のワーゲンですが、MIL(マルファンクションインジケーターランプ)が点灯しました。
以前残っていた、P0300とP0304に加えて、P1136(第1列混合物アダプテーションエアシステム希薄過ぎ→わけわからん訳だけど要は、エア吸いか何かで排気ガスが薄くなっているよ、ということです)

I have a '99 1.8T. I had been smelling fuel for a couple of days while driving. I checked my injectors and sure enough, the smell was coming right from #2 and #3. I pulled the injectors, replaced the O-rings and the smell was now gone. =)
However, right after that my RPM's started bouncing low when at idle and the CEL came on after driving for 20 minutes under load. Had the car VAG'd and the DTC was 17544 - Fuel Trim Bank 1 (Add) System too Lean P1136.

Replaced the vacuum lines.
Idle still rough.
Cleaned throttle body.
Idle still rough.
Replaced MAF.
Cleared code.
Drove for 20 mintues.
CEL came back one.
Idle still rough.
What else could it be?
The idle wasn't rough before pulling the injectors.
I double checked all of my connections and seals around the fuel rail.
No gas smell so no leak there.
Anybody have any suggestions?
The car drives fine.
Getting really tired of the low bouncy idle though.

I suspect you've created a vacuum leak somewhere without knowing it.
Also, reset the throttle adaptation if you haven't already.

Where else can I look for the vacuum leak. I have spent hours trying to hint it down but no luck. I have replaced the lines that come off the manifold. There must be another common leaking point somewhere.
I reset the throttle adaptation but still get the bouncing idle at startup and when it's in Park. While I'm driving everything feels fine.

I would disconnect the battery for 30 minutes or so and completely reset the ecu. It may have been overly compensating for the other problems and needs to zero itself out now that you have fixed them.

OK, I can try that. Is there any other way to reset the ECU? Can it be done with a VAG-COM or is disconnecting the battery the best way?

The place I'm thinking about for the vacuum leak is @ the injectors where you replaced the o-rings. It is not uncommon for them to get bound up when putting the fuel rail back in place.
If you're confident that is not an issue, and you can't find another vacuum leak, your MAF is junk.

the MAF got replaced right after this all started and the problem is still there.

Then we're back to the vacuum leak.

Yeah, just not sure where else to look.
I've been doing some reading on the 'tex and it seems that a lot of 1.8T owners (golf and jetta) have been having problems with the PCV check valves not sealing properly.
And also with the spaceship looking valve next to the airbox leaking oil too.
I've checked mine and there seems to be a little residual oil buildup around both areas?
Anyone know if this blockage or leakage would cause a P1136 code?

bump...
I've got the same code that is coming up  !
At first it would go out after a few starts, but now it's pretty constant. 1 day off; numerous days on.
I've changed the vacuum hoses (the one's that I found) on top of the engine. There's no gas smell or noises from the engine compartment when it is running (of course other than the engine running  ).
I've checked the gas cap...looks good.

I cleaned the snow screen. It was full of junk but I vacuumed all the stuff out.
The car runs great. It's a '98 1.8T with tiptronic. I've owned a Scirocco, Corrado, Rabbit (291K), Jetta, GTI (212K), and now a Passat (74K), so I understand the little quirks the VW's can give  . I just don't know with this new one.
I've read most of the posts and searched, but I'm still at a loss.
Should I just put a sticky over the CEL??? :weirdo:
TIA

I ended up fixing my issue by pulling the injectors out again, reseating the o-rings, putting it all back together and BAM--- problem solved.
No smells, so leaks, no bouncy idle and no CEL!
There must have been an air leak around one or more of the injectors. :-P Been good for the past few weeks now. thankfully.

So how did you localize the gas leak to two injectors in the first place?
I am thinking of putting a straw up each nostril, but I don't want to give my kids any ideas. Seriously,
I have had a gas fumes smell in my garage for the last couple months.
What do I need to do to change the o-rings on my injectors? THANKS!

I found some great, very detailed instructions over on the 'tex in the 1.8T area.
You can even find the part numbers for the set of 0-rings there too.
I've got a couple of pics of the injectors removed and rings if you want too.

...well as a follow up to my post on 3.19.04, I've had a little more "behind the wheel time" and have gotten a better feel of the car.
What I've noticed (still no fuel smell) is when the CEL goes out, the car seems to glide or freewheel smoother/easier. As soon as the CEL comes on it feels like an anchor was thrown overboard :???: .

Sorry for the boat reference. Better yet, it feels like there is more engine backpressure similar to using the gears on a manual to slow down.
Would a bad fuel injector seal cause this situation? Fuel consumption appears to be about the same.
Lastly, the car sound throatier upon acceleration when the CEL is on . At least I think it does.
Thoughts?!?
TIA

bump...
I recently put in a MAF from a '98 Jetta. At start up (every start up - hot or cold) the idle fluctuates for a few seconds and then evens out. Runs better than before, but the CEL is still on.
It sounds like this MAF should work and everything buttons up to it, but I'm out of ideas.
Any suggestions on this...the car is at 79K so I don't think I'm covered under the warranty or should I try anyway?
TIA

I wish you'd just buy the correct part, Racha.
Sharky
but doesn't the MAF from the 2.0 fit our 1.8T?
ChkYaHead

I was going along those lines.
I've got a brain cramp reading all the other posts on if the 2.0 will work in the 1.8T's.
As it turns out maybe 1 or 2 people have given an absolute "should work" response.
But if you do a search and read the posts that ask that very question, they aren't answered or left hanging.
So I can say no it won't...or won't work properly.
Right Sharky?

So that being said, I ordered the right one for my car and it should be to me by Friday.
I'll post my results when I change it out.
