400E Auxiliary Fan Circut questions I have a 92 400E. Auxiliary fan does not turn on whae it should (either while AC is on or when engine gets over 105C). I have tested the fans and they function, so issue is elswhere.
I have been going nuts trying to find a schematic with no success, so if anyone could help with that, thanks in advance. Here is what I have found so far. The wire that connects to the top of the preresistor was rusted in half. Looks like the preresistor is shorted (o hms) so ordered a new one. I think i messed something up by following some advice I recieved in a post by shorting together the wires that went to either side of the preresistor (taking the resistor out of the circut).
Fan turned for a second but heard someting pop in the area of the fuse box (fan stopped turning, expect without the resistor, it turned fast and drew too much current?) but was unable to find anything blown. Some questions...
1. Are there any fuses between 12v and the preresistor? If so where? 2. Is it possible that I blew the relay? Is it fused? 3. Are there online schematics or somethig I can reference?
Checking to see if you got help. As another newbie I am not sure I can help.
The following pertains to my 93 300e 4matic. I apologize if does not apply to your 400e.
I just replied to another thread about my radiator fan issue. The fans on my car are pulling way to much current. When wired normally the fuse that blows also runs the driver window and sunroof I believe.
If everything in your interior is still working, then it is likely a problem other than in the fuse box. I saw another post mentioning a fan motor issue where the owner pulled the motor winding and corrected his issue without removing the fans. Also mentioned bearing issue but I believe you stated that you fans turn freely. __________________ Joel Schmeltzer Sherwood, Oregon '93 300e 4matic
Sounds like a different issue. I would look at the aux fan relay. The fuse in the fuse box (at least in the 400e) is specifaclly for the relay. The lager fuse (30 amp) is for the aux fan circut.
This is getting more odd as I venture further. This morning I replaced the 30 amp fuse, and the relay with no change.
So, if I turn on the key with the AC on max with the AC pressure snesor (red) jumpered, the relay closes but the fan does not turn. I know the fans work becuase I can manually close the second relay (which normally closes when the engine temp exceeds a certain temp) and the fans turn on full speed. The pre-resistor is brand new, the relay and the fuse are brand new and the AC pressure switch is jumpered. What am I missing?? Last edited by rangelic; 09-25-2010 at 11:07 AM.
I had a problem with the fans and my '92 400E. The fan's relays would get over-heated and the fans would stop turning. The mechanic I had said the problem was the fans themselves and I could get new relays, but that wouldn't fix the problem. He was right. Good luck
Thanks Patricia. My problem is that the fans never start up in the first place. It's getting more complicated as I have replaced the relay and the fuse. I can manually activate the relay and the fans turn *high speed "temp circuit) but the low speed circuit (for the air conditioner) is where the problem is. When I jump the AC pressure connector, turn on the AC and turn the key, the relay engages but I never get 12v to the pre-resistor (which is also new).
If I wasn't already bald, this would definitely be a hair thinning excersize. Thankfully, fall is here and the 90 + days are gone, so I have some time.
I have a 1993 400E. The air conditioner is acting weird. I have taken it to the local Mercedes dealer a couple of time and they say nothing is wrong. Once they kept it for 3 days to test it. It blows cold air only some of the time while driving. After an hour or so, it will only blow warm air. Is this a thermostat problem? I want to get a little more info before taking to the local dealer again. http://www.justanswer.com/mercedes/2cdaa-1993-400e-air-conditioner-acting-weird.html

I am the owner of a 92 400E (143,000) miles. She has been good to me. However, today the AC just does not work. I tried to run it in EC mode, regular mode and using the fan but the blower does not come on. Any ideas or suggestions before I take her to the dealer along with one arm and leg as a inspection payment?
You did not mention in your post whether there was any trickle of air coming from the vents, and if there was some air, was it cool or just ambient?
If the system was working fine yesterday, and the blower failed to come on, first check the fuse on the blower circuit. It is located in the fuse box mounted near the firewall (not sure about a 400E, but on an E320, the fuse/relay box is on the firewall right at the master brake cylinder).
If the fuse is ok, and there is a trickle of cold air coming from the vents (which you shouold notice when the car is moving), then in all likelyhood, you have burned up the blower motor. I have had three Benzes in the last seven years, and everyone of them has seen the HVAC blower motor fail at anything from 100k miles up to 185k miles on my 300E.
Strange, I just had air conditioning trouble on my 400E of the same year with almost the same amount of miles, a couple hundred off. I just moved from San Diego, my first name is Matt and my last name starts with D! Anyway on mine the belt tensioner went bad causing the belt to slip and turning the compressor off. It would be errie if that was your problem as well. __________________ 1992 Mercedes-Benz 400E
RE: blower fuse, on mine, at least, there is a separate blower fuse located outside the fuse box. It's a strip fuse and it's in a small black box bolted to the shock absorber mount. It flips open from the side. Make sure you check that fuse.
The failure Zeronero mentioned above was probably caused when the compressor controller "sensed" a difference in speed between the compressor (which would slow down with a slipping belt) and engine crank speed.
This is a failsafe system that disengages the magnetic clutch because the differences in speed between the compressor and engine is assumed to be because the A/C compressor may be mechanically failing and seizing up as it fails. As it seizes, it will stop rotating, even though the engine attempts to continue running.
The HVAC blower motor is not tied to this failsafe circuit; so, the blower should continue to run even if the A/C compressor has been disengaged. The fact that the blower no longer works is more than likely due to a defective switch in the A/C control module, or to a failure of the blower motor. In my three failures, 100% were due to motor failure!

Mode of failure on these blowers is that the motor carbon brushes just wear out with time.
Cost to replace the blower motor is around $400 including the new motor.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.

I just moved from San Diego, my first name is Matt and my last name starts with D! Anyway on mine the belt tensioner went bad causing the belt to slip and turning the compressor off. It would be errie if that was your problem as well.

2011/8/24(水) 午後 9:55返信する
This is a failsafe system that disengages the magnetic clutch because the differences in speed between the compressor and engine is assumed to be because the A/C compressor may be mechanically failing and seizing up as it fails. As it seizes, it will stop rotating, even though the engine attempts to continue running.
2011/8/24(水) 午後 9:55返信する
The HVAC blower motor is not tied to this failsafe circuit; so, the blower should continue to run even if the A/C compressor has been disengaged. The fact that the blower no longer works is more than likely due to a defective switch in the A/C control module, or to a failure of the blower motor. In my three failures, 100% were due to motor failure!
Good luck.

Do a search on AC fuse. Odds are that's the cause of your problem
