Thanks for all your replies folks, much appreciated. Symptoms occur randomly while driving but also I can see the clock suddenly hunt for time if I sit in the car with no ignition key in. Recent fault codes generated were as follows:
9112 - Intermittent fault in CAN communication with rear SAM
9118 - Intermittent fault in CAN communication with SAM (Driver Side)
96A1 - Climate Control CAN - Intermittent communication fault with Instrument Cluster
D409/D40A - Gearbox - Intermittent loss or incorrect CAN message from control unit ESP
C155 - Gearbox - Intermittent loss or incorrect CAN message from Instrument Cluster
9056 - Parking Assist - Intermittent CAN communication fault with Instrument Cluster
9059 - Parking Assist - Intermittent CAN communication fault with control unit lower panel
9068 - Parking Assist - Intermittent loss or incorrect CAN message from central gateway control module
9040 - Multifunction (SAM-Front (Signal Acquisition and Control Module SAMV171) - Instrument Cluster no longer transmits over interior CAN database - CAN bus off
9089 - Multifunction (SAM-Rear(Signal Acquisition and Control Module SAMH171) - Instrument Cluster no longer transmits over interior CAN database - CAN bus off
9354 - Multifunction steering column module (MRM171) - Intermittent fault in CAN communication with Rear SAM
9346 - Multifunction steering column module (MRM171) - Intermittent fault in CAN communication with Instrument Cluster
If any further advice could be offered before I take car to Mercedes (and inherit large bill no doubt) that would be very much appreciated.
