There is a lot that can be learned by listening to your engine. Is it telling you something important or is it just rambling on with nothing to say? If your car starts to change its tune, you should give it a listen. Nobody knows your engine better than you do. If it starts to sound odd, or even a little different, there could be a problem. If you catch these types of problems early enough you can avoid a lot of time at the repair shop later, not to mention the money!

5 Common Engine Noises (and What They Mean)

If your car starts making weird engine noises and they are sounds which you are not accustomed to, it can be confusing.

2013/10/27(日) 午前 8:10ogw*og*2

All cars will emit some sort of noise, which is the general nature of a vehicle. It develops what some people refer to as a "personality," and these noises become part of the performance of the car. These noises do not necessarily mean anything is wrong with the vehicle, but we all get to know our cars, until one day it makes a noise that stands out from the usual tones. That's when we tend to tune in and get worried. Here's a list of what some of these noises might indicate.

1. Clicking and Tapping Sounds

An audible tapping or engine clicking noise coming from the front of your car will definitely draw your attention.

2013/10/27(日) 午前 8:12ogw*og*2

顔アイコン

Your ears will perk up and you will tune in to the noise, open a window and try to figure out what is going on. The tapping or clicking will increase as you accelerate and become faster.

This could be what is known as a 'tappet,' or the upper valve train. The causes could be a number of issues starting with a worn part. It could also indicate that the oil pressure is low. Check your oil pressure gauge when you hear this sound and follow guidelines to determine the exact problem. Take the dip stick out and make sure you have enough oil in there.

2. Deep Knocking Noises

These are usually a sign of deep trouble and yes, you should be worried. 'Rod knocking' sounds could mean that one part deep inside the engine has worn out. If your rod bearings have worn completely out or become too loose, it is only a matter time before the bearings fail. In this case, you should not use the car until the knocking engine noise has been fully and properly tested, diagnosed and repaired.

3. Rattling and Whining Sounds

If you hear a whining or rattling engine noise from your car when you accelerate it could possibly be that your cam shaft belt is badly aligned or slipping. Have your cam shaft belt checked or look it over yourself if you have the right knowledge. It should really be fixed by a good mechanic, otherwise you could have more trouble further down the road.

4. Squealing When Accelerating

This is an unmistakable sound and it is quite ear splitting. This is your fan belt telling you it is in pain. The fan belt can loosen over time and when you start your engine and the fan belt (often called the serpentine belt) can squeal when the rubber teeth underneath it start to drag. If the fan belt is loose it will not be able to move at the same tempo as the pulleys which control it, hence the squealing noise.

If this happens with your vehicle you should look in the manual for repair procedures and tighten it correctly. It may have worn enough to need replacing.

5. Grinding Engine Noise

If you hear a deep grinding engine noise, this may not be your engine, but your brakes. Check your front brake pads for signs of complete wear. If the metal is grinding against the cylinders, replace your brakes. If the noise does continue, check with a good mechanic for correct diagnosis.

113 Solutions for "engine rumbling noise" problems

...Engine noise At initial start, the engine making a noise and gradually stop after 2 minutes of being started. However, during acceleration the noise comes back and eventually stops after I've reached a level speed. The dealership doesn't know what the problem is. I just recently paid $700 for a power steering pump. Otherwise, the car runs fine.

Hi there. There might be a number of things to consider here, but the two worst things (most expensive) that it might be is either piston slap or crank rumble. Now, given that you have changed the power steering pump, it sounds like you might have an external noise and so my advice prior to you having changed the power steering pump would have been to disconnect the pump belt firstly.

2013/10/27(日) 午前 8:24ogw*og*2

If the noise was still there, then there is nothing wrong with the power steer system. So you must now do the same with the alternator and A/C pump belts.
Have all the belt drives (apart form the cambelt of course) disconnected - if the noise goes away, you have narrowed down the problem area. If the noise is still there, you probably have crank rumble or piston slap.

2013/10/27(日) 午前 8:26ogw*og*2

顔アイコン

Best way to diagnose piston slap is during the warm-up period of the engine, this is when the pistons are not quite oval and is effectively lose in the cylnder walls. To determine this the most effective way is to play with the accelerator whilst accelerating gently, accerate and then just back-off on the throttle slightly, if you hear the rattling noise, you can play with the sound by easing back on and off the accelerator.

2013/10/27(日) 午前 8:27ogw*og*2

You'd actually do the same for crank rumble, but the difference in sound is the crank rumble will sound heavier whereas the piston slap will sound lighter and of higher tone.

If that sounds like what you have (either piston slap or crank rumble) then it really is no big deal and I'd wouldn't worry about it too much.

If you do think that this is what you might have, then just make sure you are using the right grade of oil and it's a quality oil and all should be fine. Hope this helps. Scottech.

Rumbling noise from my bmw 318i when i change gear only on 2/3/4 gear

When you think the engine is really powerful even my dads one makes that sound. I think it's the parts like airbags, handbrake area which have degraded due to Aging.

I have an intermittent rumbling noise under the hood (like a distant lawn mower) in a 1996 Thunderbird 4.6L starts after the car warms to operating temp and lasts about 10-15 seconds. I just fixed a broken fuel hose connected to the canister purge valve; the broken hose caused the check engine light to come on (code P1443).

I think I noticed the noise before I fixed the hose. I fixed the hose and still noticed the noise. Doesn't do it after short stops. Seems to do it in the morning when the engine is cold and it warms up to normal operating temperature after a few minutes. The noise did not set off the check engine light yet.

Testimonial: "Changed oil and filter every 4K; used name brand oil & filter. The car has 114K and is using 1 qt every 1K; this is the most of any car I had except for a '64 VW. Any suggestions for using an additive? Thanks Peter for the news even though bad news."

Change the evap vent solenoid canister located near the master cylinder on the right side of the engine or your hoses may be cracked. Good luck!

its proberly what they call a secondary air intake pump - what this does is increase the air flow only on cold start up - the colder it is the longer it stays on - if the noise gets louder and you will notice - get it changed - we have the same problem over here on the vauxhall omega and corsa's - bless em got to be GM

you need to have the computer reset to get the check engine light to shut off there is a list of error codes that has to be cleared from the computer so the check engin light will shut off but it wont hurt to drive with the light on for a while as long as you fixed the problem
