gauge problems
Hi,does anyone know what method the r32 uses to regulate the voltage to the fuel/water temp/oil pressure gauges,as mine have begun to over read and move eraticly sometimes.I have checked the wiring diagram and found no seperate regulator,and suspect there is a diode on the speedo unit that is breaking down,can anyone confirm this?

If they are anything like after-market electronic gauges there will only be two items - the sender and the gauge. Given that you can read the info on the gauges via other methods (i.e. via consult port) I would guess no stages are present.

I would guess that the senders are more likely to be at fault given that they get hot.

I have tested the senders and they all test ok,most guages have a method of regulating the voltage and its usualy part of the guage as the sender is basicly a variable resistor,hence testing the resistance when testing the sender.Without a method of regulation the readings would vary with the votage of the system so the fuel gauge would go up when the car was started and charges the battery.

Unfortunatly the only one of the gauges that can be read via consult is the water temp,and the ecu has its own sensor for that so it doesnt help other than to confirm that the water temp is fine even tho the guage says its overheating.

To give more information about the problem the oil pressure/water temp/and oil pressure all over read together in unison,sometimes they are all fine and others they all go crazy,but allways together,this is why I think that voltage regulation is the issue.Also the rev counter somtimes stops working when the gauges go to the top.

Funny I thought you could get boost pressure and oil temp/pressure. Perhaps I'm confusing myself with the MFDs.

I fancy that your problem might be earthing. Almost every single electrical problem I have had with my car is down to earthing.

If the problem is common have you considered whipping off the centre console and popping a meter on the centre gauges. I haven't noticed a voltage reg (or anything else for that matter) in the loom between the dash and the centre console loom. My memory is hazy but given that the voltmeter is in the centre console I'd guess that all of the guages (and dash) get 'normal' voltage and the gauges themselves have regs in them.

I think that the ignition switched power feed goes to all three gauges - to be honest it was years ago that I was playing with it. To my mind it makes more sense to have a single power feed rather than multiples. As I mentioned this is how the after-market gauges work.

The fact that you have a problem across the gauges at the same time is shouting earthing to me.

If I remember I still have a couple of OEM console gauges in the garage if I remember I'll have a glance at the back of them to confirm my recollection of the ignition switched feed going to all of the gauges.
