Hi all.
I'm new to the forum and hoping for a bit of help please.
I've just taken the plunge and bought my brothers E320 CDI Avantgarde estate. It's 5 yrs old (Dec 2004) but immaculate and hardly used (23K miles).
I got a mate to connect up his "Launch" diagnostic kit and it's come up with several fault codes. One was a failed Glow plug which we confirmed.
However, we have also found these 4 although the car drives perfectly:-
P1861 The left rear wheel rpm signal sent from the traction system via the CAN bus is implausible.
P1860 The right rear wheel rpm signal sent from the traction system via the CAN bus is implausible.
P1876 The wheel rpms from the traction system are not available on the CAN bus.
P2012 The brakng signal from control unit N47-5(ESP,SPS and BAS control module) is not available on the CAN bus.
Can anybody shed any light on this please? Are these genuine problems, or ghosts in the machine. I gather the Merc system gathers fault codes on a regular basis and often with no basis in fact?
Cheers, Gerald.

It looks as though there may have been a low battery at some stage, and the faults are not there now or the ESP and BAS lamps would be on and possibly the ABS as well.
The codes should always be removed after going onto diagnostic gear otherwise you will never know what is going on

Hi Malcolm
Thanks for that. Could well be the cause. My brother hardly uses the vehicle. When he does it always tells him certain services are not available untill the battery charges a little. He has recently had a bigger battery fitted but still gets these problems due to sometimes going two weeks or more between vehicle useage.

There are no fault lights on the dashboard (except occasionally the Glow Plug) and the vehicle drives beautifully.
I am hoping I am doing the right thing buying the vehicle but the price seems right at £12K.
My friend has offered to remove the fault codes once I take delivery of the vehicle.
Gerald.

I do think you will be ok with that car..it sounds a good un.. cancel the faults and take it for a good drive to recharge the battery..many owners hook up a trickle charger every now and then for cars that arent used much to keep the battery in tip top condition..

Thanks Xtractor fan.
Took the cosmetic covers off the top of the engine earlier today and had the glow plugs out in 15 mins. We copperslipped the threads on the new glowplugs (Lucas) and had them refitted in another 15 mins. I could not believe how easy it was. The inline 6 engine was spotless. While the covers were off I popped open the air filter cover to find the original cartridge still in place.

A quick visit to the local factors and a Mahle replacement was sourced (just like the original). Popped all the covers back on and Bob's your uncle. Total cost of parts £69.90p.
Then got my mate to clear all the fault codes - Lovely.
The car Purrs like a cat. Now convinced I have a good one. Hope to enjoy a couple of years of trouble free luxury motoring before taking a view on what to buy next.

Will be very glad to see the back of my 2 year old Ford Focus 2.0Ltr Tdci. Have been so uninspired by it that it has spent most of the last 2 years sat on my drive, whilst I have been driving around in a Renault 5 (sourced on Ebay at £67).
Cheers, Gerald.

The air filter at 23k is ok, I know my original lasted to the same mileage. I will be turning over the 170k miles tomorrow and so far only had to deal with the one issue these in line engines have, injector seals and easy to sort out but not for many miles yet in your case. Price etc sounds right but there are service issues to watch out for.

Stay with this site, the feedback is good and even if you dont find yourself having to look for assistance often the other posts provide very useful advice or warning.
I would look at a transmission fluid change due to age/time rather than mileage but check with others on the site. There are recommendations on this, mine has been changed twice now [5 speed auto]. Enjoy the drive, its a nice engine and you wont find much to better it.

Hi again.
Thanks for that. Your suggestion to change the transmission oil sounds sensible as the vehicle is now 5 years old. I'll get it done in the next few days.
What are the service issues you speak of with this vehicle?
Thanks, Gerald.

Service issues?
Hi fault codes are the same as when SBC update has been done, probably just want clearing

as above, these are very common codes and can be caused by almost any work on the braking system, even changing pads. this is why wis net says to delete the fault codes after re-activating sbc.
